In the 1990s, the southern regions of the country experienced serious difficulties in providing natural gas from neighboring Uzbekistan. The Amangeldy gas condensate field, which was discovered in the 1970s, is currently being developed. However, at the initial stage there were not enough personnel to develop it and supply gas to the population. In 1997, according to the proposals of the gas industry organizations, specialties in the oil and gas industry were opened at the M.H.DulatiTaraz Regional University. These specialties were mainly intended for the training of personnel in Amangeldy Gas LLP, as well as in KazTransGas JSC, which is engaged in the transportation and supply of gas to consumers.

The sphere of human activity related to the development and use of the Earth's interior. It includes all types of human impact on the Earth's crust, primarily for the purpose of extracting minerals, their primary processing, as well as scientific research related to mining technologies.

In 1934, the Kazakh Mining and Metallurgical Institute was established in Alma-Ata.

In 1943, the mining sector was formed at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Kazakh branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, transformed in 1945 into the Institute of Mining of the KazFAN USSR.

I. Satpayev, D. A. Kunaev, A. S. Popov, A. S. Saginov, O. A. Baykonyrov, Sh. A. Altaev, A.V. Brichkin, A. Zh. Mashanov made a significant contribution to the development of mining science in Kazakhstan. Currently, research on mining science is conducted in research organizations and educational institutions of mining profile.

Since 1993, the Republic of Kazakhstan has been a permanent member of the World Mining Congress.

In 2012, according to the proposals of mining industry organizations, specialties in mining were opened at the M.H.DulatiTaraz Regional University. These specialties were mainly intended for personnel training in Kazphosphate LLP, KNAUF GYPSUM TARAZ LLP, as well as in AK ALTYNALMAS JSC, which is engaged in mining production.

The purpose of the educational programs of the department "Oil and Gas and Mining" is to provide training for bachelors in the oil and gas and mining industries with competence in accordance with the needs of developing industrial enterprises of the Zhambyl region and the southern region. In addition, in the future it is planned to train students under the educational program "6B07216-Oil and gas engineering" program Schlumberger Eclipse and achieve membership in the international organization of engineers of oil and gas enterprises (Society of Petroleum Engineers).
